Here is an obituary for one our own that I found.
John C. "Jack" Barck Obituary Barck Dr. John C. "Jack" Barck, 81, a retired U.S. Army Colonel and a resident of New Smyrna Beach for the past 22 years, passed away May 9, 2014 at the Hospice of Volusia/Flagler after a prolonged illness. He was born on February 9, 1933 in London, Ohio, the son of Clarence E. Barck and Jeanette (Bowshier) Barck. He attended public schools in London, graduating from London High School in 1951. While attending high school, John Barck apprenticed under Dr. Gibson beginning in eighth grade. His love for animals and his aptitude for the sciences equipped him to choose veterinary medicine as the perfect career. Dr. Barck attended his beloved Ohio State University, College of Veterinary Medicine with his childhood friend , the late Dr. James Herman. He was in the graduating class of 1958 and was a life member of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association. He was also a active member of the Omega Tau Sigma fraternity. One of his many activities included going to the Horse track with friends at Scioto Downs and the Delaware Ohio County Fair, home to the "Little Brown Jug" one of his favorites. Dr Barck enjoyed being a supportive alumni and watched every OSU football game, filling his home with "Buckeye" memorabilia. After graduation, Dr. Barck entered into private practice in the Steubenville area. In February 1962 Dr. Barck was drafted into the US Army under the provisions of what was known as the "Doctors' Draft," instituted in response to the conflict in Vietnam. He was commissioned as a First Lieutenant and, following basic training, was assigned as Station Veterinarian at what is now Fort Drum, NY. He volunteered for duty in Europe and was assigned to Livorno (Leghorn), Italy where he met his future wife, Grayce Kenemer, of New Smyrna Beach and a teacher for the Department of Defense Dependents' School System (DODDS). Subsequent to his return from Europe Dr. Barck received additional military training and then was assigned to Fort Polk, LA. He then was assigned to Vietnam where he volunteered to serve an additional year beyond the normal one year tour. Other assignments included: the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC where he received the Master of Public Health degree; the Defense Personnel Support Center in Philadelphia; the US Army Health Services Command in San Antonio, TX; the Office of the Surgeon General, Department of the Army, Washington, DC, Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, GA; US Army Korea where he served three years; and US Army Europe, Heidelberg, Germany. Dr. Barck and Grayce were married in 1970. She accompanied him on his assignments during their marriage. His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Service Ribbon. He also received the President's Award of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) which is awarded to only three veterinarians nation-wide annually. In 1992, Dr. and Mrs. Barck returned to New Smyrna Beach and established their permanent residence, building their perfect dream home. Both remained active in the New Smyrna Beach area and Volusia County. Dr. Barck served on the NSB Animal Control Board, also volunteering with Citizens on Patrol with local law enforcement agencies receiving accommodation for both. He supported his wife, Grayce's busy schedule by chauffeuring her throughout the state of Florida. Even with busy lives, they still enjoyed remaining active socially including many visits from friends and family. They were always proud to display our community. He was predeceased by his parents and his beloved wife Grayce who passed away in March 2010. Survivors include a sister, Nancy Barck of London, OH; and his beloved companion, Tiger.
