08/30/2016: "Obituary for Harry Savage"

Harry H. Savage Jr., good friend, father, and husband, 68, passed away Aug. 13, 2015, after brief illness. One of his favorite sayings was, “This ain’t no dress rehearsal.” He fervently believed this, and lived his life in such a way.

Harry was born on Nov. 13, 1946, in New York. As he grew up, he lived in many places with his family including Texas, Mexico, and Maryland and finally Miami, Fla.

After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Border Patrol in 1966 and worked for a short time before enlisting in the Army. He honorably served his country in Vietnam for 13 months as a canine officer walking patrol with Johan 458X. He returned to the U.S. Border Patrol and was stationed in San Diego. In 1974, Harry transitioned to U.S. Customs. He worked with U.S. Customs until 1983, when he accepted a position at FLETC as an instructor in the Driver and Marine Program. He became branch chief of Marine Law in 1986 and remained until 1996. He made it a point to let you know that Marine Law was the best job he ever had. He was transferred to the Enforcement Techniques Division as a co-division chief and retired in 2001 as acting branch chief for Behavioral Science. Harry was made an honorary Southerner by his peers. He participated in the annual Maggie Valley Motorcycle trip for many years as well as the Sherwood Society. He was an active member of the Brunswick Supper Club and the local VFW Post 2588.

He enjoyed the comradery of the SRTA Car Club and Wednesday night tune-ups. Harry was an avid hunter his entire life. He was an active member of the Skinner Place Hunting Club which was one of his most enjoyable pastimes. Recently, he enjoyed his annual fishing trip with close friends to Lafitte, La. Besides hunting and fishing, Harry loved playing sports including softball and rugby. His true love was coaching his son’s little league baseball teams for many years.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Muriel and Harry H. Savage Sr.; his sister, Susan Clark; and nephew, Jordan Clark. He is survived by his wife Glynda Savage; children Ryan (Heather) Savage and Brandon Savage; and one grandchild, Benjamin Savage.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the VFW Post 2588, the Brunswick Supper Club, the Skinner Place Hunting Club and SRTA Car Club.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, in the chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Abe Brown officiating.
